Seniors want to age gracefully and maintain their independence as much as possible in their golden years. At Providence Place, we offer several programs to help seniors live in their homes for as long as possible while giving the care and the support they need to manage their health. We also provide support and services to adults with disabilities who are living in their own homes in the community.
Welcome to the Maguire Centre
Our adult day programs (Medical and Social Programs) provided through the Maguire Centre, meet the care needs of seniors and other adults with physical disabilities providing treatment and support for individuals with cognitive or physical impairments or those who may need more social and recreational opportunities to enrich their lives.
As with all Providence Place programs, the Maguire Centre day programs emphasize holistic care that treats the mind, body and spirit that adds life to years, not just years to life.
Maguire Centre Medical Program
The goal of our medical program at Providence Place’s Maguire Centre is to focus on seniors and adults with physical, short-term and/or longer-term rehabilitation needs. Its goal is to enable seniors and adults with disabilities at risk of institutionalization to continue living in their own homes by providing assistance and support to both clients and their caregivers. The Providence Place multidisciplinary team typically provides services to individuals with chronic illness or disability, or to those requiring shorter term rehabilitation.
Medical Program clients are referred by their physician, followed by an assessment.
We know that seniors want to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible. Our team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists and dieticians develop action plans to assist in the prevention of hospitalization, falls, injuries and disease.
A client need not be recovering from surgery or an injury to take advantage of Providence Place’s Maguire Centre services, but we certainly offer specific plans for seniors and adults in need of restorative care and rehabilitation.
Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Recreation
After an evaluation, our multidisciplinary Geriatric Assessment and Rehabilitation team and Maguire Centre team works with our Therapeutic Recreation program to create an individualized treatment and therapy which includes the most progressive therapies currently available. Whether the goal is rehabilitation after surgery, or simply maintaining independence, our rehabilitation department which includes two physiotherapists, two occupational therapists and several qualified assistants provide treatment as indicated in the following areas:
- Occupational therapy
- Aquatic Therapy
- Speech and Language Pathology
- Group Programs
We also offer quality Clinical Nutrition services and support to help seniors and their primary care providers with
- Nutritional education
- Meals and snacks
- Special diet planning (e.g., diabetes, food allergies and sensitivity)
Maguire Centre Social Program
Mental engagement and socialization are key to staving off depression and keeping the mind sharp. Research has shown that creative activities, like painting and music appreciation, and outdoor activities, like nature walks and horticulture, improve self-esteem and decrease loneliness, which are great benefits to seniors.
Referrals to the Maguire Centre Social Program may be self-initiated or by family members, physicians, or other health care workers.
As with all of our programs, our Therapeutic Recreation and Rehabilitation programs plan both group and individual activities that fit the client and community. Some of the activities on offer, which family and visitors are always welcome to participate in, are:
- Onsite and offsite fitness activities
- Gardening time for horticulture and outdoor enthusiasts in our Healing Garden
- Wood working in our wood shop for those mechanically gifted
- Art and music time for those creatively inclined
- Pet visits for our animal lovers
- Holiday celebrations, where catering is provided by our full service cafeteria
- Birthday and family celebrations, where catering can also be arranged through our cafeteria
- Continuing education opportunities for our resident intellectuals
- Cultural programs for those theatre buffs
- Computer time (and classes) for those who want to connect online
- Special dementia care through our dedicated Guardian Grove Community
At the Maguire Centre, our goal isn’t just to provide respite to caregivers, but also provide a community for Saskatchewan’s seniors, where they feel welcome and engaged. Activities are enjoyable and fun, yet therapeutic—all in a safe and caring environment.
Maguire Centre’s respite care offers:
- Nursing supervised care
- Entertainment, activities and social engagement
- Personal hygiene care
- Recreation and exercise
- Meals and snacks
- Individual and/or family counseling as necessary, provided by a social worker.
Our interdenominational Spiritual Care Department at Providence Place provides a ministry of presence and listening that focuses on compassionate care for all.
The goal of the Spiritual Care staff and volunteers is to help our residents, clients and their families know that they have value, that they are loved, and that they are not alone.
Though we could put our Healing Garden under mind and body, as you’ll find recreation there as well as horticultural activities, we find that the garden’s real gift is how it makes our residents feel. There’s just something about communing with nature that soothes and invigorates, which is one of the reasons we host so many events in the garden (when weather allows).
